Deterrent for the future

A lot people were inconvenienced Wednesday afternoon due to a false bomb threat at TelEm on Pond Island (see related story). Not only the company’s headquarters but also the adjacent Government Administration Building and residents in the immediate area had to be evacuated as a precaution, while traffic was diverted away from Soualiga Road.
With the country already tense over the threat posed by Tropical Storm Isaac, nerves were needlessly rattled even more. Emergency crews had to be dispatched and basically waste their valuable time as well.
All this because of some person or persons who apparently don’t care about the consequences of their actions. Whether done in anger or as a joke, this kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable and downright criminal.
A woman has been already detained as suspect in the investigation. Such a swift response is appreciated. The culprit must not be allowed to get away with it.
Earlier bomb threat cases at the airport and a local bank have led to successful prosecutions and convictions. Authorities again showed they will spare no resources to bring those responsible for these ghastly deeds to justice. That’s the best way to discourage others from following suit.
Whoever did this may have indirectly done police detectives a favour by targeting the local telephone service provider. If a call to anywhere can be traced one would think it should surely be there.
A stiff sentence preferably with time in prison seems called for, to set an example that will hopefully serve as strong deterrent for the future.
