Census of population starts January 17-23 on French side

MARIGOT--The annual census of the population in St. Martin will take place from January 17 to January 23, 2019, the Collectivité informed.

L’Institut National de la Statistique et des Etudes Economiques (INSEE) and the Collectivités organise each year a census of persons living in France, the Departments and Overseas Collectivités.

Qualified interviewers are recruited for the task and will be visiting homes in selected districts starting January 17. Interviewers are required to present their official identity badge to homeowners when they visit.

The census involves obtaining information from the homeowner about the house and who is living in it, among other questions. A census of the population is very important, as it not only determines the number of inhabitants in the territory, but also defines and adjusts public policies in terms of the territory’s needs.

The homeowner’s cooperation is very important during the phase of reconstruction this year. Ultimately it is the homeowner who benefits from the social and public policies set by government. Conducting a census is required by law and it is each citizen’s civic duty to participate.

The Collectivité thanks the population in advance for welcoming and cooperating with the census interviewers.
