Abolition of slavery anniversary to be commemorated in Colombier

MARIGOT--The Collectivité has announced the programme for the 170th anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery, which will take place for the first time in the village of Colombier and on the new official date of ending of slavery in St. Martin, Monday, May 28. The programme begins with artistic presentations, traditional dances and songs by the group “Anitié” from 8:30am to 9:20am. The official opening and drumming segment by Hélier Coquillas is at the Arrow Root Rock Monument at 9:00am with the laying of a wreath, and a moment of meditation for the ancestors. There will be a march in traditional local costume.

The Grain D’Or dancers will present a 10-minute segment at 9:35am with other artistic presentations “Oh Freedom” by Natisha Hanson and Shawn, and dances, chanting and percussion with a choir of 64 children.

Official speeches will be made by President Daniel Gibbs and Préfète Déléguée Anne Laubies. Natisha Hanson will sing “Oh Sweet Saint Martin Land” before a drumming segment and blowing of the conch shell by Hélier Coquillas.

A cultural space will be inaugurated and a plaque unveiled. Additional artistic and cultural presentations will be made by Jihany Gibbs and Sidonie Miller, and a percussion demonstration “Sarafina” performed by the Junior Territorial Council members. The event closes with a traditional breakfast served by the Nature Valley Association of Colombier.

The Collectivité encourages the public attending the ceremony to arrive early on Monday.
