Aruban minister a corruption suspect

ARUBA--Aruban authorities suspect Minister of Social, Labour and Youth Affairs Paul Croes (AVP) of corruption regarding the issuance of work permits for which he was allegedly paid, in cooperation with other officials of the ministry. The money may have subsequently have been laundered as well.

The Prosecutor’s Office made this announcement at a press conference. The Eman Cabinet member had not yet been detained because authorities saw no reason to do so at this time, but a total of 13 searches were conducted in the case at businesses and homes, including one at his houses in Noord.

Prime Minister and AVP leader Mike Eman said his government has full confidence in the justice system and would give complete cooperation to law enforcement. He added that a decision on Croes’ position and political future would have to wait until clarity is provided.

General elections are scheduled for September.

The probe started after reports on Facebook. Several witnesses were subsequently heard.
