Fatal scooter accident in Orient Bay claims 2 lives

MARIGOT--Two young men have died from injuries sustained in a scooter accident during the early morning hours of Sunday morning, the Gendarmerie confirmed.

Commandant Sébastien Manzoni indicated the two individuals were aged in their 20’s and came from the Dutch side. They were riding a T-Max scooter travelling in the direction of French Quarter at around 2:00am when the accident occurred near the Rancho de Sol Restaurant on the brow of the hill in Orient Bay.

“It appears that high speed and reckless overtaking on the wrong side of the road was the cause of this accident,” said Manzoni. “They had a head-on collision with a pick-up truck coming in the opposite direction. The truck could not avoid the impact and ran over the bodies of the two men when they slid under the wheels of the truck. Neither of the two men on the scooter was wearing a helmet.”

Despite the best efforts of emergency services to save the individuals, one died on the spot and the other passed away on the way to the hospital.

Manzoni added, blood samples showed alcohol or drugs were not factors contributing to the accident. Additional information received indicated the pick-up truck was a Dodge Ram on its way to Grand Case to pick up materials from the drag racing event held earlier that night. It was not clear if the two young men who died also participated in that event.
