PHILIPSBURG--Insurance company NAGICO will meet with Parliament in a Central Committee meeting on Tuesday at 2:00pm to discuss the company’s hurricane coverage of Princess Juliana International Airport and the fallout that landed the two parties in court. A judgment has been rendered in that case for the company to pay the airport.
The public meeting, requested by coalition Members of Parliament (MPs), will focus on the airport pay-out. However, Parliament Chairwoman Sarah Wescot-Williams said in a press conference on Thursday that other questions related to insurance in general could be posed to company representatives. The answers to those questions would be dependent on the reps’ ability to answer in the session.
All Parliament’s permanent and ad hoc committees are to meet Monday morning to elect new chairpersons following the start of the 2018-2019 Parliamentary Year on September 11.
On Tuesday afternoon, Justice Minister Cornelius de Weever and MPs will discuss the points submitted by the “Stand for St. Maarten” movement.
A plenary session on the status of schools with Education Minister Wycliffe Smith continues Monday at 5:00pm.
The Permanent Committee for General Affairs will tour hurricane shelters on Wednesday morning. This will be followed by plenary sessions on amending the budget and other topics.
Ombudsman Nilda Arduin will discuss with MPs on Thursday morning the results of her systemic investigation of disaster risk reduction and preparation launched after Hurricane Irma struck the country a year ago.
The draft law on study financing will be the discussion point on Thursday afternoon.
