WILLEMSTAD--Several political analysts who are following the latest developments in Curaçao agree that it is important to have international observers for the snap election on April 28.
“This way we will not have any doubts on the results of the election,” said one pundit. “What about someone at the level of Jimmy Carter?” The latter refers to similar work done by the former American President in Venezuela and other countries.
According to these analysts, the doubt that exists now in the electoral process and the local politicians should be taken away considering the current major discussion taking place especially on the operational part of the process. One of the doubts is over the cardboard boxes used to deposit the ballots.
“Even though no irregularities have ever been reported with these boxes, the situation this time is more volatile and maybe it is a good idea to put an observer just to keep everyone at peace," said another analyst.
The Kingdom Council of Minister has meanwhile taken the execution of the elections out of the hands of the MFK/KdNT/PS/MP/Braam/Dannawi interim cabinet that wanted to postpone them, before agreeing to cooperate with the early return to the polls after all. Governor Lucille George-Wout is now in charge of the process.
The Prosecutor's Office in Willemstad has also announced that it will be on the alert for vote buying or other types of election fraud.
The 11 parties that qualified to be on the ballot will get their candidate list numbers and colours today, Monday. The eight with current representation in Parliament can keep their existing colour.
