CARICOM, Brazil strengthening relations as secretary-general pays official visit

BRASILIA, Brazil -- Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General Irwin LaRocque paid an official visit to Brazil on 26 October 2015 at the request of the foreign minister of Brazil, Mauro Luiz Vieira.

In the course of the visit, the secretary-general met with the foreign minister and senior officials at the foreign ministry, Itamaraty, the director of the Brazilian Agency for technical cooperation, and the president of EMBRAPA, the agricultural institute. He also participated in a Round Table with students at the Rio Branco Institute diplomatic school.

The visit was aimed at strengthening relations between the Caribbean Community and Brazil by maintaining the dynamism of the ongoing dialogue, reviewing technical cooperation processes, and opening the path for a high level meeting.

The secretary-general was informed that the Brazilian government has just completed its internal processes to become a non-borrowing member of the Caribbean Development Bank.

The secretary-general took advantage of his presence in Brasilia to meet with the ambassadors and diplomatic representatives of CARICOM member states (Barbados, Guyana, Haiti, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago).
