Children and parents sent home as smoke chokes sports complex

CAY HILL--Hundreds of children and parents were sent home as the Primary School Soccer Competition was smoked out at Raoul Illidge Sports Complex Saturday morning.

Only one game was played due to the smoke from the dump fire. Sister Magda in the Under 11 division defeated Sister Borgia 4-1.
“Due to the hanging smoke over the field the Primary and Secondary School Soccer Competitions were cancelled,” said St. Maarten Soccer Association president Johnny Sing. “We couldn't stand the responsibility for the kids to play in such a situation.”
He continued, “It’s been ongoing for a while, but today was a bit thicker than usual.”
Five games had been slated to be played during the morning in the Primary Competition. The Secondary schools with eight boys’ teams and five girls’ teams compete in the afternoons.
