Active Living: Get wet and wild!

By Laura Bijnsdorp

I have only done it thrice in my life so far but I’ve found white water rafting to be an absolutely thrilling experience every time! With the waves crashing around you and everyone on your team laughing and shouting, rafting is truly a one of a kind activity. You get a big adrenaline boost and get to see nature like you never have before! In addition to being a fun way to spend an afternoon with colleagues, friends or family, did you know that rafting also offers a number of health benefits?

A good workout

During rafting, you use your upper body and you paddle quickly and vigorously through strong rivers. The movement of paddling tones your arms, back and shoulders. The strong currents of the river can add to the challenge. You will be paddling for hours at a time, which means you’re also getting a great cardio workout. Believe me, you will be feeling a number of muscles a few days after you have gone rafting!

A good way to get outdoors

Most of the rivers used for white water rafting are in scenic locations that give you the chance to explore your surroundings in a whole new way. Adventure is good for the mind because it’s a positive change of scenery. Being outdoors is a way for you to soak up the sun and take in nothing but deep breaths of fresh air. In fact, studies show that exercising outdoors is more beneficial to mental health over indoor activities.

It reduces stress

Rafting provides you an escape from reality. The quietness of nature lets you relax and leave all your worries behind you, especially when the river is slow-moving. When the river picks up again, you are so focused on the task at hand that you release the stresses of life, as with any other exercise.

Makes you more social

Being in the wilderness with a group of people gives you the opportunity to bond with your teammates. White water rafting takes discipline, teamwork and leadership skills, so getting to know your team is very important. This means that it’s a good way to bond with colleagues, get closer to friends or have a family outing.

Boosts self-esteem

After you have tackled a difficult river journey, you will be left with a feeling of accomplishment and an increased sense of confidence. There are many obstacles during wild water rafting, so you learn quickly that with enough hard work, dedication and help from friends, you can achieve anything!

There are no extreme rivers to raft in Sint Maarten, but on your next vacation, make sure to ask around if there is rafting. You don’t have to go too far, Honduras, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean all offer rafting opportunities!

Time to get wet, wild and healthy!
