Desiree: An interview about fitness with George Scot!

Hi, my name is Desiree Winkel, owner and founder of Fitness Coaching. Fitness Coaching is a studio/gym where you can work out with professional trainers. Among the workout programs we offer are boot camps, cardio boxing, weight loss training, group training and personal training. Follow what we do on Facebook or Instagram.

A couple of years ago, a local gentleman entered my studio, looked around, smiled and said. “Yes!” Smiling back at him, I asked, “Yes; what sir?” “Yes, I would like to train here,” he answered. Now I honestly can’t recall asking him who had referred him to my Fitness Studio, but it was obvious that he wanted to start training.

The gentleman mentioned that it was necessary for him to start training due to a hip replacement surgery he had done in 2014. It was his second such surgery as he had also done hip replacement surgery in 2012. His physiotherapist at the time, who was based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, had advised him to start training. And so it was that George Scot began his fitness training at my studio, where he continues to train up until today.

When I asked George what the benefits of his training are, he told me that he feels a lot less stiff in the mornings and it gives him a great, positive vibe. For example, the traffic has been so bad lately that sometimes he’s had to park at the movie theatre – that’s about an eight-minute walk from where we are located on Welfare Road. But George said he’s noticed that walking back to his car goes easy for him even after his workout. He finds it very refreshing to train in the morning: “A great start to a beautiful day.”

George started his journey at St. Joseph School. As best student, he earned a scholarship to attend Radulphus College in Curaçao. He later went to the University of Utrecht in Holland and studied dentistry, which was quite unique at that time as he was already a father of four.

The Antillenhuis in The Hague negotiated six long months from January till July 1967 with the government of Sint Maarten for a contract to practice dentistry in Sint Maarten; but they could not reach an agreement even though the government was obligated to employ George Scot as a dentist; because when you are the recipient of an EEG Scholarship on condition that the profession is needed in your country then the government is obligated to guarantee that position.

Unfortunately, the government did not give in and that is why George practiced in Holland for 20 years, working mainly in Den Bosch. Around 1972, the Antillenhuis received a telegram inquiring if George was still interested in coming to Sint Maarten. Really wanting to go back to his lovely island, George did not have to think this over; he called his wife, who was just unpacking the boxes for the new house they had bought, and told her they were moving back. And that’s how his Sint Maarten adventure started 46 years ago on Sint Maarten.

Retired about two years ago, George was still helping a friend up to the time of Hurricane Irma – a real gentleman. George is funny, always happy and is fit! You won’t believe he is 80 years young! Respect. We at Fitness Coaching are privileged to have him as a client.
