Focus on Physical Health
For the week’s Health Seat interview, we sat down with local fighter Beni, who will be competing this month in the first MMA fight competition in St. Maarten.
1: Tell us where you’re from and how you ended up here in St. Maarten.
I was born in Guyana and moved to Sint Maarten when I was 10 years old. My family is here in Sint Maarten and they’ve always supported me in everything I do.
2: What is your field of work?
I work full-time as an electrician with Chill Contracting B.V.
3: How do you handle time management and the balance between work and training?
It’s all about discipline and priorities. I stick to a strict schedule, make time for what’s important, and ensure I’m always improving – whether at work, in training, or in life.
4: What inspired you to get into fight training?
I’ve always loved the discipline required and skills involved in martial arts. I train at BJJ SXM under Akeem Lewis, and it’s been an incredible journey of growth.
5: Do you do other workouts?
Yes, I cross-train a lot. I do strength training, cardio, beach runs, and I love hiking.
6: Do you have a favourite beach?
Mullet Bay is my go-to beach.
7: Is there an element of spiritual health and wellness that is involved with your training?
Absolutely. Fighting teaches humility, respect, and mental clarity. I stay grounded through meditation and give back to the community whenever I can.
8: Can you tell us a little bit more about your upcoming event on April 12?
Yes! I’ll be competing at Hyperstrike FC on April 12. It’s going to be an action-packed event. I will be facing Brandon Alvarez.
9: Have you ever had an embarrassing moment in training?
Oh, definitely! One time, I went for a high kick and completely lost my balance; I landed flat on my back in front of everyone. We had a good laugh, but hey, that’s part of the learning process!
