Just Ask Aggie: Vitamin D

Just Ask Aggie: Vitamin D

The chaotic and stressful pace – brought to us courtesy of COVID-19 – has certainly ushered in new afflictions and challenges to our wellbeing. Every day that we awake, it seems that we are “relearning” how to cope with, prevent, and/or cure all the strains that seem to be popping up in style.

In every industry – the natural health industry is no exception – products come up quickly and go just as fast. Some others put down their roots and linger; and there are those who steer the path to healthy lifestyles and last for a long time. We believe that one such product is Vitamin D, often referred to as “the sunshine vitamin”. (For the purpose of this conversation, we will be specific and talk about Vitamin D3.)

Vitamin D plays a really important role in our overall health and wellbeing. Whenever we think or hear of Vitamin D, our bones and teeth are perhaps our first trend of thought. But did you know that Vitamin D is critical for all systems of the body? Vitamin D plays an important and dare I say a critical role in our immune system, muscle use, cardio, respiratory, and even brain function.

So how does it work? When taken, Vitamin D directs the calcium in our blood, bones and gut and greatly assists the cells in our body to properly communicate with each other.

So let’s check out some benefits in no particular order:

Helps cognitive function

We all know how debilitating dementia can be. It is progressive, chronic and severe enough to mess up someone’s everyday life. Several studies show that a Vitamin D deficiency contributes to the increased risk of dementia. So why not up your Vitamin D intake to help reduce the risk of cognitive decline!

Improves anxiety and depression

These two often go hand in hand and ongoing research has shown that Vitamin D is an important factor in preventing and treating anxiety and depression.

Improves chronic fatigue

Chronic fatigue is when you feel tired and drained most, if not all, of the time. Stepping up on your Vitamin D Levels can improve fatigue.

Promotes bone health

We all know from school days that Vitamin D is good for our bones. It keeps our bones from becoming weak and helps reduce fracture occurrences.

Regulates the immune system

The primary function of our immune system is to defend our body from “foreign invasion”. With a Vitamin D deficiency, there appears to be an increase in susceptibility to infections of the immune system. So what does that spell? It spells that healthy levels of Vitamin D can help your immune system to stay healthy.

What are the sources for Vitamin D3:

The sun

That’s numero uno on the list!! And believe it or not, the darker you are, the more sun you need!!

Fish

Not just any fish, but salmon (the wild caught one if you please), sardines and tuna.

D3 supplementation ... Check your levels as you may need more than 1000 IU.

There is so much we can share about Vitamin D3, but we will stop here for now.

I read this somewhere and I’ll share it with us in closing:

Less Sun = Less Vitamin D = Less Health = More Sickness.
