~ Minions of Caribbean ~
“Minions of the Caribbean” is a new Junior Carnival troupe that was created for St. Maarten children. The troupe is the brainchild of dancer and entrepreneur Sade Hodge.
Hodge: “While looking at the Junior Parade last year, I realised that the essence and creativity are being taken away from the participants and put more towards the adults. With so many troupes and a lot of simple costumes, I decided to participate in the Children’s Parade, all-inclusive with the costumes being affordable for toddlers and teens. Parents are able to join their children for the second-day parade with our adult costumes. One night I was speaking to costume designer Ackeem Wilson about Carnival and we decided to come up with a Disney concept. I then pitched the idea to a friend to get his thoughts and he suggested, ‘Why not name it Minions instead?’”
Wilson agreed and became the one who designed the costumes. The costumes are available for four sections of the parade: Stuart (boys, ages 1-15) US $75; Davina (girls, 1-15) $75; Bobby (Girls, 1-15) $95; and Agnes (girls/teens, 8-15) $124. The girls’ costumes are changeable from a full bike tard or two-piece bike tard.
Registration is open until April 6, and each registration contains one free ticket to the Junior Queen Show. Viewing for the mas camp and trying out the costumes will take place at Tropical Hair, W.J.A. Nisbeth Road #59. The contact number is 524-9049.
