A Rare Rabbit in China

Ili Pika is a rare rabbit that is known as a “magical rabbit.”

The very shy rabbit was spotted for the first time in 20 years by a conservationist who “discovered” this rabbit a long time ago. It was in the 1980s that he first recorded seeing this rabbit. Sadly, they are one of the most endangered species on the planet.

Recently, the conservationist managed to get some pictures of this rare little animal for the first time in 20 years! The sighting of the rabbits happened in the Tianshian mountains. These mountains are in the north-western region of China.

Because people do not get to see these sweet, little, fluff balls, they are thought to be “magical”. They are called “magical rabbits” because, like any other magical creature, people do not come across them on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, since first sighted, the numbers of these animals have gotten fewer and fewer. The conservationist feels that there are fewer than 1,000 of these rabbits still living. As he was the person who discovered them, he feels responsible for them and wants to do what he can to help stop the decline of this species. He says he would feel very guilty if they happened to reach extinction (which means there would be absolutely no more alive on earth) while he is able to do something to preserve them.

Actually, scientists know very little about these animals because they are so rare, but they do say they are definitely a member of the rabbit family. Scientists say it is all because of global warming that these animals are a dying breed.

Look at these sweet, little rabbits and remember that everything we do as humans affects our planet, our lives and every living, breathing two-legged and four-legged thing, as well as the trees, shrubs, flowers and grass on this world of ours.

We need to stop doing things that are bad for the planet. Recycle, reuse, reduce is uppermost in everyone’s minds. That is not all; we MUST say no to using plastic as much as possible. We can start by saying “We do not want to use plastic straws.”

It is not rude to drink soda, water or juice from the rim of a glass. After all, adults drink wine, champagne and beer from a glass. If a restaurant says they must give you a plastic straw, say NO. Their glasses should be as clean as the plates you eat from. If they are not clean, you should not drink at those places.

Say NO to being given a plastic sac at the corner store! You do not need a plastic sac, which will end up in the dump or just blow around the streets in the wind. Plastic does not break down making dust and dirt. Take your own re-useable bag to the store with you, instead of using the plastic bag they want you to use.

Get a personal water container and fill this bottle at home – plastic bottles are very bad for the environment too. Try to cut down by starting with little things that you can do. It will make a difference to the world you live in!
