Caribbean Living Statues

Would you like to become a beautiful living statue? Have you seen kids performing as living statues at festivals? Would you like to make a famous painting or a fairy tale come to life? This dream can come true right now! The deadline for signing up is November 30.

Beyond Kultura Events Foundation’s Loekie Morales is the founder of the Caribbean Living Statues Festival. She says, “In our festival, there is space for children. We need to give them the opportunity to get involved. You only need good health and a creative mind; and you must be eight years or older to participate.”

The Living Statues Festival Kids Days are Saturday and Sunday, December 19 and 20.

Learn about becoming a living statue, how to behave and move like a statue, but also how to prepare your clothes, hair and skin. Children in the festival must do a week of workshops from December 12 to 18, to become a beautiful living statue.

It’s a lot of fun, but work too! You need to make a one-page paper on your chosen character (for example, Jack Frost or The Little Mermaid) to decide on the clothing, colours, make-up, and props. Look at The Reading Boy in the photo. He studied the character and we helped him to become a nice baseball player statue. He freezes (stands still) and does small movements, telling with body language the story of his character.

Loekie Morales says she will coach you and guide you in this artistic world to express your creativity this way. Get your parent to call 527-1223 or go to Arlene Halley of NIA (National Institute of Arts) on the Long Wall Road in Philipsburg to register for $60.
