“Floss” was the word of the week at Sister Regina Primary School last week when the school hosted its second annual Hygiene Week, inviting various guests to educate the students on the importance of hygiene and health.
The Honourable Minister of Public Health, Social Development & Labour VSA, Minister Emil Lee opened the week with a speech that stressed the importance of hygiene within the school but also at home and with neighbours and throughout the community. He also commended the school for this initiative.
Collective Prevention Services was on hand to explain the importance of dental hygiene and flossing. Additional to dental care, their vector control team reminded students on how to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes and what to look out for in their yards. Collective Prevention Services returned with their Youth Healthcare Team to talk about keeping the body clean and how to prevent lice and ringworms.
Dietician Karen Eusebius spoke to the students about the importance of eating foods that are all the colours of the rainbow and reducing sugar intake. All of the kids gave her hugs at the end of her presentation.
The students had a very educational week of presentations culminating with a flash mob Floss dance edition. All students gathered in the school’s main playground to end the week on a very fun and healthy note. During the week, students and staff reminded students of the importance of washing their hands and fun hygienic activities were completed.
Students thoroughly enjoyed the week. When asked what they liked about it, one student replied, “We learned a lot!” Another student added, “The person speaking about ringworms and lice spoke in a very friendly way.” Another response: “I enjoyed the dentist because she really showed how to brush teeth correctly and I also liked the tooth brushing songs.”
Thanks to donations from Collective Prevention Services and Delphine Even of Martijn Trading, every student and teacher received a hygienic goodie bag at the end of the week. A big thank you to Minister Emil Lee, Collective Prevention Services, Karen Eusebius and Emmanuel Gimenez for making this week a success.
Sister Regina Primary School has kicked off the school year in full swing, after having missed opportunities to celebrate its 50th anniversary last year, because of Hurricane Irma. Next on the list is their annual bike-a-thon which will be held on October 27 to celebrate the school's 51st birthday. Save the date!
