Montessori Children’s House School

~ Where a child discovers self ~

“If an educational act is to be efficacious, it will be only that one which tends to help toward the complete unfolding of life. To be thus helpful, it is necessary rigorously to avoid the arrest of spontaneous movements and the imposition of arbitrary tasks.” ~Maria Montessori

Montessori education is an educational approach developed by Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori based on her extensive research with young children and characterized by an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical and social development.

Located in Cole Bay, Montessori Children’s House School has been educating more than 100 students each year. With highly experienced staff, certified by the American Montessori Society (AMS) and AMI, the school functions with the following elements:

  • Mixed age classrooms, with children ages 3 to 6 years
  • Student choice of activity from within a prescribed range of options
  • Uninterrupted blocks of work time, ideally three hours
  • A constructivist or "discovery" model, where students learn concepts from working with materials, rather than by direct instruction
  • Specialized educational materials
  • Freedom of movement within the classroom
  • Two trained and experienced Montessori teachers in each classroom.

At Montessori Children’s House School, we offer a unique, open environment that emphasizes the child’s natural interests and allows the child to set his or her own developmental pace. During the 2015-16 academic year, the school teachers organized various field trips and celebrations to enrich the learning experiences of their students.

“Tea with Moms” and “Breakfast with Dads” – MCH School honours the mothers and fathers of their students on this day. Students sip tea and eat breakfast with parents at school. Preparations for the event begin two days in advance. Children create a craft for the parent and help the teachers with the breakfast preparations.

The Spirit Week: This is a very special week enjoyed by the MCH children. It’s a week where funny ideas like “Wacky tacky day”, “Crazy Hair Do day”, Mix Match Day”, etc., are presented to the kids and they respond to them very enthusiastically.

A trip to the “Nature Park” in Cole Bay: This trip was arranged in continuation with the study of animals and their classification. The students visited the butterfly farm, the zoo last year as well as the underwater submarine in the previous years.

A trip to the Fire Station: This trip proved very educational and was enjoyed by the students of the primary as well as the toddler class. Parent volunteers were of great help as usual.

Most awaited and enjoyed by students and parents every year is the “End of the year Beach Day” – this is a day for parents and teachers to relax and have fun with their children; feeling proud to see the fruits of their hard work. “One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child.” ~Maria Montessori
