Hello, it’s Wali with some ideas about how you youngsters can help with a project! The biggest problem we all (children and lizards) have on the islands is storms. They will happen, so we need to get ready! For lizards, this is not difficult. During big storms like hurricanes, lizards with small feet and legs do not do so well, so we all practice better hugging strength! You know that hugging is really important for humans too.
Wali asked the medical students at the AUC for advice. Some of them will be training the “Young Emergency Heroes” on the island. They said we all should work on this project in case a hurricane arrives. Make a plan for your family, build an emergency kit and help your parents! Sounds fun? Too complicated for a lizard! Wali is off to do press-ups to improve his tree hugging.
Maybe you could ask your teachers for their advice too. Wali thinks teachers are great! Lizards have to learn everything on their own!
Make a plan for your family: It helps to have one person whom everyone can call if there is a problem. Arrange with your family to meet at one place if you have to leave your home (perhaps your local shelter, if you have one). Keep this information safe in your phone or school notebook.
Things to put into your emergency kit
Apart from the food and water, these can fit in a rucksack:
* Identification papers, family photographs, your meeting point and contact person (all on a phone?) in a waterproof zipped folder.
* Water – at least a gallon per person, per day.
* Non-perishable foods (such as dried fruit or peanut butter).
* First aid kit and medications for anyone on regular treatments.
* Matches in a waterproof container.
* Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap.
* Paper plates, plastic cups and utensils, paper towels, toilet roll.
* Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person.
* Change of clothes and an umbrella.
* Flashlights and extra batteries, or glow sticks.
* Whistle to signal for help.
* Can opener (manual).
* Paper and pencils.
* Baby supplies (formula, diapers) and pet supplies if needed.
* Battery-powered or hand-cranked radio.
* Duct tape and some nylon cord.
Help your parents: Your family will have to meet, talk and make decisions. They may have to sort the house or yard.
