Hosting a beach picnic is the ultimate way to enjoy sun, sea, and sand – and all the best St. Maarten has to offer – with friends and family. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just savouring the summertime quiet, a well-planned picnic can turn a simple beach day into a memorable event.
Here are our favourite tips for creating a chic and cosy beach picnic that no one will forget.
1. Begin by selecting your favourite beach spot. From the family-friendly Le Galion Beach, to the popular Mullet Bay with its perfect sunsets, to the private Cupecoy Beach caves, there are more than enough picnic spots to choose from.
2. If you are looking for an original and affordable way to elevate your picnic, you could start by sourcing a wooden pallet to serve as your picnic table. These can often be picked up for free from big grocery or hardware stores. A pallet offers a rustic vibe and provides a sturdy surface for your feast. Place a large blanket underneath the pallet – if using – to keep the sand at bay and provide the perfect backdrop for food photos.
3. Transform your beach spot into a stylish retreat with the right decor. Scatter a variety of plush pillows around for comfortable seating and use candles for a warm and intimate glow as the sun sets. Use electric candles for a safe option, or real ones if the wind permits. Arrange (fake) flowers and plants in vases to bring a touch of nature and colour to your setup.
4. Decide on your dining style. For a chic experience, opt for real cutlery, plates, and glasses. This not only looks elegant, but is also eco-friendly. For a more casual and hassle-free option, choose cute plastic plates and cups. These won’t require cleaning afterwards and are less likely to break.
5. We believe that picnics and shared dining go hand-in-hand. Prepare a variety of small dishes for guests to share. Think along the lines of bruschetta, mini quiches, and stuffed peppers. Alternatively, order your favourite dishes and present them in charming bowls and on plates. Don’t forget the charcuterie board, a must-have for any elevated get-together. Include a selection of cheeses, cured meats, fresh fruits, nuts and crackers, and put together on a big board or in a shallow bowl.
6. Ensure your beverages remain cold by using two coolers: one for ice and the other for drinks. You could keep it easy with beers, wines and sodas, or prepare a big batch of cocktail in a pitcher to serve as a welcome drink. Think refreshing summer flavours like a tropical punch or a classic sangria (see recipe on page 6).
7. Choose a picturesque spot on the beach with a good view of the sunset. If shade is scarce, bring along umbrellas to provide some much-needed relief from the Caribbean sun. If you are planning to linger into the evening, pack flame torches to light up your space and remember to bring bug spray to keep those pesky mosquitoes at bay.
8. Last, but certainly not least, a portable speaker and the right playlist can set the perfect tone for your picnic. Curate a playlist that complements the beach vibes – think laid-back tunes during the day and more upbeat songs as the evening progresses.
