Bacchus makes magic

~ It’s the next best thing to a trip to Paris ~

In the spectrum of island eateries, Bacchus sits comfortably at the top of the pyramid in terms of quality, ambiance and pitch perfect poshness without being pretentious. Tucked away in the Hope Estate complex just outside of Grand Case, the wine cave, restaurant and gourmet food store is a world unto itself. The ambiance is like stepping into a fine Parisian bistro. The staff welcomes you in immediately, extending every effort to ensure you are comfortable and at ease.

We indulged in a full afternoon of wine and plates of various temptations – a treat to celebrate a friend’s birthday. There is likely no better way to start another year of life than such a lovely dining experience. A true celebration!

We started with a mixed plate of meats and cheeses with a basket of fresh bread. A drizzle of top quality olive oil and a smear of creamy butter added to the rich flavours. Then came an amuse bouche followed by an appetizer of ravioli filled with luscious foie gras topped with black truffles and morels. Another shared plate came with extremely soft and delicious burrata cheese on slices of black heritage tomatoes.

The Puech-Haut, a fine rose wine, continued to flow as the main courses arrived, a gorgeous Carpaccio and a Black Angus Filet of Beef served with peppercorn sauce. The Birthday Girl went for a tasting platter of foie gras prepared four different ways. The Filet and Carpaccio were served with homemade fries and salad. All was pronounced delicious.

The afternoon lingered and conversation turned whimsical. Eventually, we ordered coffees and selected a platter of sweet delights. A little of this and a little of that, and the French pastries, puddings, tarts and macarons allowed each of us to get a little taste or two, as we laughed and chatted. There is no substitute for such a day, friendship and fine conversation accented by some of the best food and drink ever to be discovered.

We should all find a way to do this now and again, so make your plans for Bacchus right away!
