For this week’s Hot Seat, Out N About interviewed DJ Arjun, from New York. He has an upcoming event here in St. Maarten in February and tells us all about how his musical career is a testament to his passion, talent and versatility.
1: Tell us: How did you get started in the music industry?
For over 20 years now, I have been a master of the turntables. I just love bringing people together through the universal language of music. I actually started by spinning tracks at basement parties in New York during high school.
2: How would you describe your music style and branding?
My music style is a blend of rich, timeless Bollywood beat with international chart-toppers and modern remixes. My brand is built on this philosophy of unity, joy, and unforgettable experiences. My ability to read the crowd and infuse every event with personalized energy has made me a standout performer at weddings, luxury events, and global festivals. Whether I’m playing a nostalgic Bollywood classic or dropping the latest remix from artistes like Diljit, my goal is always the same – to create a celebration that transcends cultures and generations.
3: What do you love about working the nightlife scenes?
My musical journey has taken me to some of the most iconic stages in the world. I have been invited to perform at the luxurious Cipriani, The Plaza Hotel in NYC, and even lighting up Times Square. I love those special holiday events such as Diwali and, of course, I really enjoy creating unforgettable moments on the beaches of the Caribbean and Mexico.
4: Can you tell us a bit more about your experience and your passion for music?
At the heart of my musical journey is my deep love for music and my belief that it can bring people together like nothing else. Actually, I was born in Mumbai, but then raised in Queens, New York. So I grew up surrounded by diverse cultures and sounds. This unique upbringing shaped my approach to deejaying. I find it interesting to blend the rich, timeless beats of Bollywood with international chart-toppers and modern remixes seamlessly. For me, music isn’t just about entertainment; it’s about connection. Music makes everyone happy and brings people together. It creates memories on the dance floor that can last a lifetime – nights to remember with family and friends forever.
5: What inspired you to get involved in music and why do you specifically like deejaying as opposed to playing other musical instruments?
My inspiration to get involved in music came from a deep passion for rhythm and the way it brings people together. Growing up, I was always drawn to music’s ability to set a mood, spark emotions, and create memories. What specifically drew me to deejaying, as opposed to traditional instruments, is the versatility and creativity it allows. With deejaying, I can take elements from multiple genres, mix them together, and create something entirely unique; it's like being able to craft a musical journey on the spot.
One person who played a pivotal role in my musical journey was my team, DJUSA, who served as both mentors and teachers in mastering this incredible skillset. They encouraged me to view music as much more than just a combination of notes or beats – it’s a universal language, a way to connect with people on a deeper level and tell stories that resonate. Their passion for music and unwavering guidance gave me the confidence to step into unconventional musical paths, such as deejaying, which allow for endless creativity and personal expression. I’ll always be grateful to DJUSA for inspiring me to push boundaries, take risks, and experiment with sound to create unique experiences.
6: Apart from playing music, do you have other interests and hobbies?
I’m a proud father and recently started an exciting new chapter in my life – I got married in 2024 to begin this incredible journey with my wife. Outside of playing music, I enjoy spending my downtime watching sports and catching up on Netflix. One of my favourite shows right now is “The Night Agent” which is full of suspense and keeps me hooked every time.
7: What makes St. Maarten magical to you?
For me, every set is about creating moments of connection, joy and celebration. I believe that music brings cultures together, and it’s about breaking barriers, celebrating life, and leaving people with memories they’ll talk about for years to come. St. Maarten / St. Martin is a magical melting pot of cultural backgrounds, ages, races and styles. Bringing it all together into one epic night out – well, that’s what I’ll be here to do.
8: How do you overcome challenges or keep a positive mindset?
Well, reflecting on my journey, I’ve been blessed with a talent from God and the ability to share it with people. From basement parties to the world’s most luxurious venues, my passion has always been to unite people through music and give them a moment they’ll cherish forever.
9: Do you have any plans for bigger concerts or travel in 2025?
I will be bringing the magic to St. Maarten for Bollywood Dhamaka Volume 2. The event promises to be an unforgettable night when I take the stage at Soggy Dollar Bar on Saturday, February 15. Adding to the excitement will be an electrifying live dhol performance by Ravi Bindra, a perfect complement to my high-energy Bollywood and Top 40 mixes.
10: What inspirational quote or song lyric would you like to leave us with?
Well, for me music isn’t just about entertainment; it’s about connection. I always say music makes everyone happy and brings people together. It creates memories on the dance floor that can last a lifetime – nights to remember with family and friends forever.
