In the Hot Seat with RealMRCarty

In this week’s Hot Seat is RealMRCarty, a native of St. Maarten/Saint Martin and well-known figure in the hip hop community, particularly in the contemporary hip hop sub-genre.

After moving to the Netherlands in 2009, RealMRCarty established a reputation in the industry, thanks to his indisputable skill for creating contagious sounds and delivering fascinating lyrics.

His music effortlessly combines parts of traditional hip hop with contemporary inspirations, connecting with listeners on a deep level. Each song is a meticulously crafted masterpiece that demonstrates his talent for writing memorable melodies and hooks.

How did you get into music?

Music has always been part of my life and my culture coming from St. Maarten – from my household to school to the neighbourhood. My older family members have been making music in all type of genres, from reggae and hip-hop to soca, dancehall and pop and many more. So I was never into just one sound, but a little bit of everything. Finally, I decided to go with hip-hop, blending it with my own style.

Tell us about your newest song: When was it released? What is the inspiration behind it?

My newest song, “Back on my grind”, was released on Monday, September 16. The inspiration behind this song was a difficult phase in life that I overcame with a very heartfelt chorus.

What would you say is your most popular song? And why do you think it is so popular?

I would say I have many popular songs on my discography. I leave that up to my supporters to choose a couple of hit songs on the list: “Chasing”, “Make time”, “Beautiful life”, “Tell no lies”, “Raa raa”, “Ruff roads”, “Family over friends”, “Really long time”, “Never nappin”, “Prayers”, and many more.

What else can we expect from you this year?

You can always expect the unexpected. I’m working on many singles with artistes overseas, for example, from the United Kingdom, Canada, Scotland, the Netherlands, St. Maarten and the United States. I also have a brand new album, titled I’m Good” that’s been in the making for quite some time.

Do you have any advice for your younger self or someone looking to become a hip hop artiste?

I would have nothing to tell my younger self, because I did everything as I wanted and learned from it, which made me who I am today. Yet, if you’re looking to become any sort of artiste, take your time with your craft and creativity. Never rush the process – good music will last a lifetime. You will have days where you feel as if you’re making no progress, but just take it day by day and always be productive. You might not see your growth as yet, but your surroundings will.

Where can people find your music?

You can find my music on all platforms from YouTube, to Spotify to iTunes. Just check any platform of your liking – I’m sure it will be there.
