Tomorrow, Friday, March 10, and Saturday, March 11, hundreds of volunteers will roll up their sleeves to help their community for SXM DOET 2022. Since its first edition in 2015, SXM DOET has grown exponentially. On average, 1500 volunteers participate in the event each year!
Forgot to sign up? No problem; there are still a few projects that can use your help. According to SXM DOET coordinators, more than 90 community projects are scheduled to be completed at various locations throughout the island. Projects include repainting of day care centres, fixing up playgrounds, beach clean-ups, building benches and school tables, fun outings with various vulnerable groups and putting food boxes together.
Signing up as a volunteer is easy. Visit www.sxmdoet.com to view all available projects; then once you find the project of your choice, click on “join project” and you are ready to help make a difference this weekend.
Now in its eighth year, SXM DOET is expecting hundreds of volunteers, as usual, to take part in this weekend’s event. Every year, volunteers of all ages, from all walks of life – residents and visitors alike – are seen helping out. The annual event is organized locally by Be The Change Foundation, in close cooperation with the Oranje Fonds, in the Netherlands. Local editions of the event also take place in the Netherlands and in our sibling islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, St. Eustatius and Saba.
The Kingdom-wide campaign aims to encourage and promote the act of volunteering for non-profit and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that work so selflessly for their communities by assisting them to accomplish these small, odd jobs that might otherwise get forgotten.
While many people volunteer their time frequently, others also wish to give back, but they cannot often find the time to do so between professional and family life. SXM DOET, being a two-day event, makes it possible for people to schedule in just one or two days to volunteer at a project that suits their preferences.
SXM DOET coordinators: “If you are looking for an easy and fun way to give back to your community, SXM DOET is a great event to take part in! You will earn some karma points, make new friends, and learn more about the amazing local NGOs on our island!”
