Roll out the Red Carpet: The Wonderful Counsellor

Roll out the Red Carpet: The Wonderful Counsellor

Peter Sagnia’s latest film, The Wonderful Counsellor, has become a standout project in the St. Maarten community, serving as a remarkable exploration of local characters and addressing crucial themes like mental health, social media for business promotions and interpersonal relationship dynamics. The film, which premiered in a “red carpet style” fashion on February 9 at Caribbean Cinemas, introduces a range of characters, each grappling with personal struggles, from therapists facing financial ruin to teens dealing with stress and relationship issues.

Sagnia’s decision to delve into mental health – particularly in the Caribbean context, where therapy is often stigmatised – adds a fresh and insightful dimension to the storytelling. His creative direction challenges societal norms, weaving in a therapist with conservative religious views, which adds conflict and intrigue to the narrative.

This movie is actually Season One of a five-part miniseries. The miniseries segments are combined together for a movie style “Theatrical Release” that ran for a total of 1 hour and 50 minutes. Two theatre rooms were booked out hosting approximately 300 persons. It was the actors’ first time seeing the movie and viewing their own performances. Dignitaries were in attendance, including Prime Minister Luc Marcelina; President of Parliament Sarah A. Wescot-Williams; Minister of Public Health, Social Development, and Labor Richinel Brug, and Dr. Bird Lake. In addition, Peter, his wife, and most of the cast were there to greet guests at the entry for “photo” opportunities and also to celebrate together after the showing.

The community’s response has been strong, with the film reflecting local realities while pushing boundaries. There was also comedy too, many viewers chuckling at nuisances that perhaps only a “St. Maartener” would truly catch. The performance by the local cast was superb and refreshing, featuring a the talented Mr. Edsel Monzon and Ms. Jenise Diaz, The Wonderful Counsellor highlights both the personal and collective challenges of St. Maarten residents, marking a significant cultural milestone for the island’s film industry.

Make is a date night! Tickets are available for screening at Caribbean Cinemas for Friday, February 14, Saturday, February 15, or Saturday, March 1. Get there early, get your popcorn and these screenings include 6:30pm meet and greet with our local cast!

Also under consideration is a run at the theatres in the Netherlands, Curaçao, Barbados and possibly some other islands. The production did get some help with funding from Culture Funds with the final post production and editing stages. They also partnered with TelEm, SER and WIB in terms of renting out the movie screens for the premiere.
