St. Maarten wins big in Statia

Statia recently hosted a Power Soca competition during their carnival celebrations. The Out & About had a chance to sit with one of the winners, Ebony Empress, to talk about her experience during the performance.

King Kembe, Junior Lion and I went to represent St. Maarten for the first annual Power Soca Monarch competition. Junior Lion won the crown and I came in first-runner up. It was the first time they were holding a competition like this and they invited artistes from the SSS islands. When they reached out to our managers it sounded like too good an opportunity to pass up.

We were treated very well, and the sponsors made sure we had everything we needed for our performances. Of course, I was a little nervous to be the only female in the competition with 11 other men, but I set my mind to it and decided I was going to put my all into the performance. This time I drove in with bikes from the back of the crowd and did it different. It was really a great experience, because when I came out the crowd knew my song, Quality Bumper, which was produced by Nikita ‘Fridge’ Christmas and mixed and mastered by Dizzle Bueno. The crowd got very into the performance and cheered me on.

I am very appreciative of the support system I had in the Funtopia team, from my management to the dancers. The promoter, Ricardo Frontin, who represents CTC Creativity, did a good job in making us feel welcome and handled everything in a professional manner. Next month I’ll be representing St. Maarten in Nevis along with Baker Jr. for the Nevis Kings & Queens Competition with a song called, ‘We are the Survivors.’”
