The entire island, including Sint Maarten Yacht Club (SMYC), got beat up on September 6. The docks, deck and fleet of small boats, which were used by the youngsters to learn to sail and ultimately to race in, got severely damaged or wiped out. As a result, the young students enrolled in sailing lessons as part of the Youth Sailing Program will no longer have the opportunity to sail until docks are rebuilt and the fleet replaced.
With all the devastation everyone – including the young of St. Maarten – is having to deal with, SMYC is determined to rebuild and to provide the youth a positive activity and distraction from the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. For the students still on island, SMYC has therefore organized a temporary solution off Kim Sha beach. Although this significantly reduces the capacity of those sailing, it is so worth seeing the smiling faces back out on the water.
SMYC officially started sailing lessons again last week and so far it has been a blast. The best news is that they still have spaces available on certain days and would love to welcome more young sailors.
