Through Cam's Lens: New Year

“The simple things a your blessings

Simple things dem a your blessings, your blessings

Simple things a your blessings

Hey, you no notice your blessings?”

While I was lying in bed scrolling through the many feeds of Instagram, my phone started to ring. As you can imagine, I became immediately annoyed because a ringing phone usually means it’s time to get out of bed. When I saw that it was Charlie, I returned to my initial state of “bum” because I figured she was probably calling to talk about food. LOL.

Charlie reminded me that it was Wednesday and that my Out ’N’ About piece was due. Barnacles! How is it that the Christmas/New Year season always seems to make you lose track of time? I proceeded to get out of bed in a less annoyed manner, because at that point, it was my decision to do so. My laptop was next to me, so I could have submitted my piece from bed. However, why not be an adult and start the day?

Can y’all believe it’s the third day of 2019? Like where did 2018 even go?

On New Year’s Eve, I was talking with a friend, who told me that I’d better not stay home sleeping to bring in the New Year. She said 2017 was basically the worst year of her life because she slept through the transition of 2016 into 2017. Guess what? Her grandmother warned her that the manner in which you bring in the New Year will set the course for how your year will go. I told y’all about these Caribbean women’s goat mouth! So there’s no way she’d tell this to me and I’d ignore a perfectly good goat mouth lesson!

I brought in the New Year on an extremely chill note with some family and friends on the boardwalk. We strolled up and down to get our cardio workout in, caught the fireworks (which were amazing by the way) and took about 17,000 pictures. My sister was out there with her Samsung phone not knowing how to act…lol. Click. Click. Stop here. Click. Oh look, it’s “fill in everyone’s name”. Click. I got some good pictures out of it, so I’m not completely mad. LOL.

What my friend said makes a lot of sense, though, if you think about it. I know a lot of spiritual people who fast during the month the January. They set that time apart for God and lay the foundation for the rest of their year.

Even in non-spiritual aspects, it’s said that how you spend the first 20 minutes or so of your day will set the course for the rest of the day. Motivational speakers encourage us to spend that first part of the day after we wake up to mediate, pray or feed oneself with positivity and encouragement. I guess you can say that you’re spraying on a “Bad Vibe Repellent”.

I’m not sure if I’m going to fast this year, but I definitely want to use this opportunity to set the tone for the remainder of the year. Let’s all use January as an opportunity to set the tone for a dope 2019.

Sheesh. I look forward to all the growth, blessing and lessons that this year has to offer, even the hard lessons and disappointments that are going to come to balance out the scales. (Please go easy on me, lol.)

In the famous words of some guy; “to infinity and beyond”.
