What is the Brown Pelican Sports Award?
The Brown Pelican Sports Award is an annual award ceremony organised by the Department of Sport, in collaboration with the National Sport Institute (NSI) and the St. Maarten Sports and Olympic Federation with the aim to celebrate the talents, successes and achievements of our athletes. It also recognises sport heroes and heroines, as well as the people, organizations, businesses and projects that make sports happen in the community of St. Maarten.
Each year at the ceremony, the award presented reflects a sport of choice – and the persons who were instrumental in developing that sport (i.e., athletes, sporting officials, etc.) get recognized as Legends. This year, the evening will reflect the sport of basketball, and the Department will honour and acknowledge our local Basketball Legends on their outstanding contribution to the sport.
Nomination for the Brown Pelican
Each year, the Department of Sport, in collaboration with the St. Maarten Sports and Olympic Federation puts forward various categories for which athletes, coaches, and sport officials of all sports, as well as businesses and/or projects that have contributed to the development of sports can be nominated. These are then formally presented to the national federations and they are asked to submit names with a substantiation of who they think should be considered for an award. This is a two-week nomination period which gives all national federations the time to submit the names of their chosen athlete, coaches, sports official, business, etc.
A committee consisting of members of the St. Maarten Sport & Olympic Federation then reviews the submissions and substantiations and determines the finalists and the winner. This determination considers a nominee’s performance and participation in sporting events/tournaments; the results thereof and the level of the tournament, i.e., International Olympic Committee event, International Federation event, Pan American Sports event, Central Caribbean Sports event, Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees event, National Federation event, and Organized/unorganized sport. These tournaments are national, regional and international. In an effort to highlight the nominees, the Department places the list of nominees in the newspaper and on social media for all to see.
