“Behind the Beyond”
Written by Stephen Leacock
Direction Albina Matuzko
“Behind the Beyond” came out in 1913 but it is just as funny today as it was then. It’s a fantastic parody of a night at the theatre, making fun of both: the play itself (here an all-too plausible melodrama about an intergenerational love triangle with a dying heroine, the quality of which varies dramatically as the acts progress) and the audience’s reaction to it. The play is interactive and actors of the theatre within the theatre are as well manipulated as trying manipulating self, trying hard to affect, as well as oneself getting affected.
“Behind the Beyond” is an ironic, interactive comedy. It’s a PARODY which allows over-the-top acting and exaggeration to the point of ridiculousness! Since the setting is a theatre within the theatre, the breaking of 4th wall is inevitable. A kind of visible bafflement on stage is a part of this experience. To deal with bafflement is a great pleasure and something what probably needs to be mastered but this arouses those vital vibrations moving in the space between actors and the audience in the theatre. Quite challenging, but joy is guaranteed!
So, this is a unique and quite EXPERIMENTAL stage production that needs participants to explore the principles and practices of Parody as a genre which includes elements of physical comedy, slapstick and complicity (interaction with inner self, partners on the stage and the audience).
AUDITION: August 27, at 1:00-3:00pm at NIA in the John Larmonie Building in Philipsburg (across from Vlaun). You do not need to prepare something. You don’t need to have any acting experience, but you should be creative, flexible, love challenges, and be able to take yourself NOT too seriously…oh, and have fun! Capacity to memorize text and work independently on your role beyond the rehearsal time (if it’s necessary) is essential.
