Think trendy, lifestyle, comfort and balance. Now realize it’s also affordable. The best of everything is now on point at Commodore Suites in the heart of St. Maarten’s exciting Simpson Bay strip. Located in the two storeys above Market Garden Supermarket, Commodore Suites is now open for business with a discounted introductory price of US $150 to celebrate their entering the market. The normal rack rate will sit at $235 per night in high season.
“We have seven suites available now and when we are complete, there will be 17 suites on the first floor [above Market Garden – ed.] and 14 on the second floor, including a penthouse and private terrace,” Manager May-Ling Chun explained as she took in the view from the lobby. “Every room has a kitchen, a king-size bed, a spacious beautiful restroom, and a TV with a workstation desk. Every room has Wi-Fi. Some rooms will be double bed suites; and on the second floor, we will have the one- and two-bedroom suites lock-off.”
Chun emphasizes the interesting architectural features of each room – unique due to the somewhat zig-zag design of the building. “Each room has a different angle. Some windows look out at the hillsides; others get a view of the beach. Some rooms have little niches, some have slightly larger bathrooms. But they are all very zen and comfortable, with similar accents.” She went on to say the theme of a “Commodore” inspired the style of the logo, the colours and the accents. “Commodore is a naval rank used in many navies that is superior to a navy captain, but below a rear admiral. The navy blue, the gold braid; this all echoes that theme in a subtle way.”
Commodore Suites can rightly be classified as a boutique hotel, meaning that it is small in size but high on personal touches. Boutique hotels feel intimate and well designed. There is a relationship that develops between the guests and the staff – even the owners. The modern boutique trend embraces certain themes such as cool and artsy or romantic and sexy. Chun is focused on all these aspects at Commodore: “We will have a concierge that will assist the guests to facilitate whatever they might like to do on the island. We will be working with other establishments to offer impeccable service: spas, beach service, excursions, tours and charters, just to name a few.”
The hotel can also claim “green” or environmentally friendly status, thanks to certain procedures in place, such as the guests’ key card system that shuts off electricity outlets when the occupants are out of the room. Daily maid service will offer guests to choose whether they want daily change of towels and linens – an option that is sure to save both water and electricity. Among modern hotels, such measures are seen as efficient and smart, but also as positively contributing to the community in a sustainable manner.
The hotel has also prevented noise pollution with insulation of walls and windows. Water-saving methods are also evident in the flush system of the toilets. Last, but not least, hot water for the guests is produced via an existing cooling system, cleverly saving a lot of energy. Commodore Suites is being marketed to discerning clients, leisure- and business-travellers from all regions, weekend getaways for travellers from the Caribbean region, and will eventually also target small incentive groups. Its close proximity to all the nightlife and restaurants of Simpson Bay as well as Kim Sha Beach make the hotel attractive to a wide range of clientele.
