The island's culture is vibrant, rich, and deeply rooted in history. This fact is celebrated in an activity book that chronicles the island’s traditions interactively and engagingly. On Sunday, April 6, from 9:00am to 12:00pm, the public is invited to the Amuseum Naturalis at The Old House in Quartier d'Orléans for the launch of SoualiKulture – a cultural activity book designed to bring the island's heritage to life for the next generation.
Created by the Soualiwomen Kultural Association (SKA) in collaboration with Les Fruits de Mer, SoualiKulture is more than just a book. It’s an invitation to explore, preserve, and celebrate the essence of St. Martin’s identity. This bilingual (English and French) collection of more than 100 pages is packed with stories, heritage photos, mazes, word games, colouring pages, and creative writing and drawing activities. It covers everything from music and dance to fishing traditions, local cuisine, agriculture, and the island’s unique language.
But this isn’t just about a book; it’s about an experience. The launch event promises a morning filled with cultural discovery and hands-on fun. Attendees will receive a free copy of SoualiKulture and enjoy activities that reflect the book’s themes, including a cultural scavenger hunt, a traditional Carnival costume display, and a colouring station for children. Light refreshments will also be available, making it a festive and welcoming event for all ages.
For non-profit, Les Fruits de Mer, this book represents a significant step in making culture more widely available to children. The effort to create SoualiKulture was a true community-driven initiative. Ten members of SKA worked closely with Les Fruits de Mer to develop a resource that is both educational and entertaining. The goal is to pass on the knowledge of St. Martin’s cultural heritage in a way that is accessible and engaging for young readers.
Following the launch, free print copies of SoualiKulture will be distributed to local schools through Les Fruits de Mer’s book program. The book will also be available for free download at lesfruitsdemer.com and for purchase on Amazon. Educators, youth group leaders, and community organizations are encouraged to reach out to Les Fruits de Mer for copies. Businesses or individuals interested in sponsoring books for schools can also get involved in supporting this initiative.
Funded by the Funds for the Development of Associative Life (FDVA), this project represents a significant investment in cultural education. More than just a book, SoualiKulture is a bridge between generations, an engaging way to ensure that the customs, stories, and spirit of the island remain alive for years to come. The launch event is an opportunity not just to celebrate a new publication but to take part in a living, breathing cultural experience that unites the entire community in a shared love for its heritage.
