Freegan founder treks the Camino de Santiago to combat food insecurity

Joost de Jong Jansen has set out on a remarkable journey of walking 1,000 kilometres along the historic Camino de Santiago in Spain. This ambitious trek aims to raise crucial funds and awareness to fight food insecurity on the island of St. Maarten. De Jong is best known on the island for founding the Freegan Food Foundation together with DJ Jansen de Jong – a non-profit dedicated to the very same cause.

The Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage route that has been traversed for over a thousand years, presents a formidable challenge. For Joost, this walk is more than a physical endeavour; it is a powerful statement of solidarity with those who face the daily reality of hunger and food scarcity. Each step Joost takes symbolises a step closer to reducing food insecurity on St. Maarten, and he invites supporters worldwide to sponsor his journey, with each kilometre representing a tangible contribution to this vital cause.

The Freegan Food Foundation, under Joost’s leadership, is at the forefront of efforts to reduce food waste and redistribute surplus food to those in need. The foundation has been instrumental in providing vegan meals and support to vulnerable communities on the island, where economic challenges and the lingering effects of the global pandemic have intensified food insecurity.

“This journey is more than just a physical challenge – it’s a mission to make a real impact in the lives of those who are unsure where their next meal will come from,” Joost explained. “By walking 1,000 kilometres, I hope to inspire others to join the fight against poverty and hunger in St. Maarten.”

Joost’s pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago is not just a fundraising effort; it’s a rallying cry for individuals and organisations to take action. Sponsorship opportunities are available per kilometre, with all proceeds directly supporting the foundation’s initiatives to combat food insecurity in St. Maarten.

Supporters can track Joost’s progress on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Polar Steps. Donations can be made through the foundation’s website, allowing everyone to contribute towards the goal of ensuring that no one in St. Maarten goes a day without food.

The foundation is a non-profit organisation based in St. Maarten, dedicated to fighting food waste and hunger by redistributing surplus food to those in need. Through collaborations with local businesses and community organisations, the foundation ensures that nutritious food reaches the most vulnerable members of the community.
