The Classical Delight Foundation board members want to publicly thank and honour their founder and first president, Roger Snow, who, after more than 16 years, believes that because of health reasons, he can no longer lead this organization, which in the course of the years has received a distinguished place in the St. Maarten community.
Mr. Snow, together with Rein Heere and Peter Scherzinger, took the initiative to bring classical musicians to the island on a regular basis when it was clear that more and more music-lovers experienced a void in their cultural life and expressed their desire for classical music entertainment.
During the first years of Classical Delight, the foundation received much support from Bob and Joan Arnow, frequent visitors to the island who owned a house in the Lowlands, and who were very instrumental in bringing artists from the United States.
The term “Classical Music” has two meanings: the broader meaning includes all Western art music from the medieval era to today, and the specific meaning refers to the music from the 1750s to the early 1830s, the era of Mozart and Haydn.
The name “Classical Music” did not appear until the early 19th century, in an attempt to distinctly canonize the period from Johann Sebastian Bach to Beethoven as the Golden Age.
Classical Delight Foundation usually organizes four concerts in the “winter season” – and each time an educational school concert also, that is highly appreciated and enjoyed by the youth of our island.
This uplifting of the cultural life on St. Maarten can take place – thanks to Roger Snow’s vision and immense contribution to the arts. We salute him with thankfulness and respect.
