Honouring Ruby Bute: A reflection on life, art, and legacy

By Foresee Foundation

On November 28 and 30, St. Maarten will bid a final farewell to Ruby Bute, the island’s beloved artist, poet, and teacher. Ruby was not only a chronicler of island life but also a beacon of cultural expression and a mentor to generations.

Foresee Foundation’s “Roots en Route” project was privileged to record a conversation with Ruby, offering a poignant glimpse into her worldview. The project, funded by Het Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied and the Fund for Culture Participation, celebrates the stories of individuals who shape St. Maarten’s cultural fabric. Ruby’s portrait, one of 20 captured for the initiative, delves into themes of diversity, life’s transience, its joys, and its trials.

During her interview, Ruby reflected on the interconnectedness of experiences, likening life to a book filled with pages shaped by beauty, pain, and growth. “In The Book of Life, there would be empty pages if we didn’t have all these stages to go through,” she said. Her words carried a sense of gratitude for both the triumphs and challenges of her journey.

In a touching moment, Ruby shared the story of Pichu, a neighbour’s dog who found his way into her home and heart. Their bond symbolised the deep connections that can form across boundaries, whether with people, animals, or nature. “He came for breakfast every morning and dinner every evening,” she recalled, describing Pichu’s love and loyalty. For Ruby, even the simplest relationships embodied life’s most profound truths – love, gratitude, and the inevitability of loss.

Ruby’s life spanned 81 years, from her birth on January 13, 1943, to her passing on November 5, 2024. Her work – self-trained yet widely celebrated – continues to inspire. Her art chronicles the essence of St. Maarten: its people, culture, and vibrant spirit. She was also a tireless advocate for youth and the arts, a legacy she hoped would be supported through donations to the Funtopia Youth Initiatives Foundation in lieu of flowers or wreaths.

As the island mourns Ruby’s passing, we take comfort in the beauty she created and the wisdom she imparted. Her words, captured in the “Roots en Route” video portrait, remind us that every wrinkle, joy, and pain writes a unique chapter in the story of life.

Take a moment to watch Ruby Bute’s portrait on the Foresee Foundation’s YouTube channel and reflect on her indelible legacy. Through her art, words, and spirit, Ruby remains a part of St. Maarten’s heart.
