MPC students get serious about sewage

Healthy environment means clean water

Milton Peters College (MPC) students Cassandra Williams and Sofia Dubrosse recently conducted a survey of some rather disgusting stuff – sewage – in particular, sewage run-off. Here’s what they had to say about what they learned.

Are you someone who let your sewage run onto the road, into the fresh pond, into the lagoon or even into the ocean? Take a moment to reconsider what you’re doing as letting your sewage run onto the road, into the fresh pond and lagoon, or even into the ocean is a form of pollution. This can cause sicknesses such as amoebic dysentery, cyclosporiasis and cholera, which can affect not only you, but also the people around you.

There are a few solutions that can lessen the amount of sewage that is being deposited onto the road, into the fresh pond, into the lagoon or even into the ocean:

  • Maintain septic tanks. All septic tanks require emptying ONCE A YEAR. They only hold 12 months’ sludge storage and if sludge starts to empty into the soak away soil, it very quickly blocks the air spaces (porosity) in the soil, the effluent cannot soak away, you suffer a soak away failure and the septic tank fills up, backing up the system. That causes it to overflow and run onto the roads.
  • More people leading their sewage pipelines onto the sewer plant in Illidge Road.

Let’s make St. Maarten a better place by starting with our sewage.
