Purple Pineapple: Discover the island’s best kept secret

Remember when shopping was fun? Browsing and dreaming; imagining how a lamp or a rug might add to your home, or even be a catalyst for a total remodel? Better still, when the items being perused are unique and affordable? Welcome to the world of the Purple Pineapple.

At Purple Pineapple, the inventory is eclectic, high end, and always changing. Items come in and go out with clocklike regularity. That’s because it’s a store that buys and sells top quality items from island residents, working on a consignment basis. In addition, they place orders for Indonesian Teak furniture which is then shipped directly from the factories.

The owners, Barbara and Darlene, will welcome you with warmth and easy conversation. They love coming to a house to determine the resale potential and then sending a truck to pick up items such as tables, bookshelves, sofas and chairs. They sell them for you and take a small commission for their efforts.

So if you or anyone you know finds themselves with a house full of furniture items that need to be dealt with, as often happens when a relative passes away or family is leaving the island, don’t forget about this little store that can provide a big help. They often repaint or refinish items to enhance their appearance, making small repairs as needed; but they generally only want to take in quality pieces. And while they aren’t interested in any appliances, such as ovens, washing machines or refrigerators, they are happy to consider artwork and other collectibles.

Purple Pineapple is located in Cole Bay, #12 Wellsburg Road, just a little past Island Water World. Open Monday through Friday 10:00am to 5:00pm. Need information? Call Barbara at 581-5011 or Darlene at 581-5552. Stop by and see for yourself, visit with the ladies and enjoy a cool hour or so browsing to your heart’s delight.
