Learning isn’t confined to classrooms. It spills into community centres, coffee shops, and even online forums. It’s a lifelong journey, a constant evolution. That’s the driving force behind the Social Innovation Via Lifelong Learning (SIVLL) society – a new non-profit dedicated to weaving personal growth and social change together through community education. SIVLL believes that a thriving community is one where learning is accessible to everyone, regardless of background or circumstance.
Founded by Sahar Thomson, SIVLL is on a mission to ignite community wisdom and build a better St. Maarten. Their approach is two-pronged: Engaging adults through enriching educational experiences and empowering youth through mentorship. This isn’t just about acquiring knowledge; it’s about fostering connection, sparking innovation, and creating a ripple effect of positive change.
The Community Education Program is SIVLL’s current focus.
It acts as a hub for local experts and passionate learners to connect and explore topics ranging from attachment theory and nutrition to mindset and interpersonal relationships. Think of it as a dynamic, ever-evolving classroom without walls. SIVLL is actively seeking individuals eager to lead book clubs, hobby groups, support networks, or any other affinity group that fosters adult learning and community engagement. This is a chance to share your expertise, connect with like-minded individuals, and contribute to St. Maarten’s intellectual life.
Looking ahead to 2025
SIVLL will launch its youth mentorship program. Partnering with local high schools, businesses, and organizations, this initiative will provide crucial support to young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. One-on-one mentorship, homework assistance, and workshops focusing on personal growth, interpersonal skills, and community change will equip these young individuals with the tools they need to succeed. This isn’t just about helping them build successful careers; it’s about empowering them to become active, engaged citizens who shape a brighter future for generations to come.
