SMYC’s Primary School Sailing Program restarts

The Sint Maarten Yacht Club (SMYC) announced the highly anticipated restart of its Primary School Sailing Program, following the summer break. Having recommenced in September 2023, the program welcomed 48 aspiring sailors between 9 and 11 years old, from four schools: Leonard Connor Primary School, Sister Regina Primary School, Seventh Day Adventist School, and the All Children Educated Foundation.

A flagship initiative of SMYC, the Primary School Sailing Program aims to introduce Sint Maarten youngsters to the promising world of sailing, fostering a love for the sea and nautical activities while teaching important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and environmental awareness.

“We’re excited to welcome a new cohort of enthusiastic young sailors,” said SMYC Manager Saskia Revelman. “Our team has been working hard during the summer break to enhance the program and tailor the curriculum, to give the new sailors the best experience possible. The Marine Industry is the second biggest industry on Sint Maarten; it is so important to introduce the next generation into this industry at a young age.”

The selection of 48 new sailors will enjoy free weekly sailing classes for the period of one year. The first six weeks of the program SMYC’s “Swim 2 Sail Program” is included. This program creates water-confidence by all students, teaching them how to move on the dock and in the water – a critical skill when practicing the sport of sailing.

The Primary School Sailing Program is made possible by a subsidy from the Sint Maarten Government; Sport Department and donations from individuals as well as from the following businesses: Lagoon Marina, the Gustavia Yacht Club, ICE (Independent Consulting Engineers) and T-Maxx T-shirts. SMYC is extremely grateful for the support of the community to make this program a reality.
