‘SouperBowl’ Sunday @ SMYC

Far more than sailing

Sint Maarten Yacht Club (SMYC) is well known for its youth sailing program, its restaurant & bar, and of course it’s the perfect location to watch mega yachts come through the Simpson Bay Bridge. However, not many people are aware of its membership program and the activities that are being organized.

In November, SMYC initiated several projects to give back to the community and realized that now more than ever, there is a need to get together and generate a community feeling. SMYC has decided to expand on its program and add more activities, social affairs and community projects. Although most activities will be geared to the membership, the public can most often join, showing that joining SMYC is not just for sailors, but for everyone.

After the community projects in November and December, which supported a local orphanage, the shelters at the Little League Stadium and Festival Village, and a local high school, SMYC decided to initiate a fun activity.

“Super Bowl Sunday is taking place tomorrow, Sunday, February 4, and for most football fans, this is a day spent with family and friends. On St. Maarten, the question: ‘Where are you going to watch the game?’ is buzzing already, and we decided that we wanted to be more than a location where you can watch the game. Therefore, we are introducing our first cook-off event on Super Bowl Sunday, conveniently called the Souper Superbowl Sunday cook-off, bringing families and friends together prior to the start of the game for some delicious tastings and of course to announce a winner,” explained SMYC General Manager Michele Korteweg.

This will be one of many new initiatives by SMYC. Other projects on the calendar are game/trivia nights, beach clean-ups, a Kentucky Derby hat contest and a food drive.

“Our goal is to show that SMYC is not just about sailing; it is the common theme that brings people together. However, we organize other activities as well, which are very much enjoyed by sailors and non-sailors. Most of these events are for members and guests and others, like the Souper Superbowl Sunday, are fully open to the public. By becoming a member, you support our youth sailing program and several community efforts; and you will be able to contribute your own suggestions.”

The Souper Superbowl is open to the public for tastings and to vote on the winning soup. It will take place from 4:00 to 6:00pm and will be followed by the game, which will be shown on a large screen starting at 7:00pm, with the match starting at 7:30pm.
