In a time that often feels fast-paced and fragmented, the steady presence of volunteers remains one of the most grounding forces for local non-profits. At Freegan Foundation, the heartbeat of the organization isn’t machinery or money; it’s people.
Angela Marcos, Tamara Carr and Signita Martin – three women, three stories and one powerful impact!
Their names might not be on banners, but their efforts shape lives every single day. Together they represent what’s quietly heroic about volunteering commitment without applause, service without expectation.
Behind the scenes, Angela ensures the engine runs. Her administrative finesse keeps things in motion, from coordinating deliveries to juggling schedules. There’s no glamour in logistics; but thanks to Angela’s sharp focus and meticulous care, Freegan Foundation stays responsive and reliable. She is the reason the work looks effortless, because she’s taken care of the hard parts before anyone notices.
Then there’s Tamara. She does more than hand out meals. With a kind word, a gentle check-in, and that unmissable smile, she brings humanity back into the daily struggle of those facing hunger. Her presence offers more than food, it offers hope – that someone sees you, hears you and cares.
And finally, there’s 78-year-old Signita. Try keeping up with her. She lifts, sorts, organizes, and encourages. There’s a quiet defiance in her energy – proof that purpose doesn’t retire. Her spirit pulls others in and pushes the mission forward. Volunteers like Signita don’t just help the community; they show us what’s possible when you keep showing up.
“Angela, Tamara, and Signita embody the very best of our community,” says DJ, managing director of Freegan Foundation. “Their unwavering dedication, kindness, and hard work touch countless lives, and we are truly grateful for their contributions.”
But these three are not alone. They’re part of a larger, diverse, and passionate volunteer network that drives the Freegan Foundation’s mission: To reduce poverty, fight food waste, and ensure that no one is left out.
Volunteers are not a bonus. They are the backbone. Without them, food wouldn’t be rescued, boxes would not be packed, and people would not be fed.
At a time when we are still grappling with economic uncertainty, the role of volunteers has never been more essential. Through their actions, they quietly craft a community that is more sustainable, more inclusive, and ultimately, more human.
