SABA/ST. EUSTATIUS--Former American Idol finalist Nadia Turner, whose mother hails from St. Eustatius, arrived at F.D. Roosevelt Airport in St. Eustatius on Tuesday evening. Turner travelled to Statia to give motivational workshops to young girls. She will be in Saba on Saturday, for the same purpose.
Upon her arrival, Turner was presented with a bouquet of flowers by little Mia Courtar, who immediately fell in love with Turner as she hugged her tightly. Representative of the Commissioner's Office Derrick Simmons Jr. welcomed the motivational speaker, joined by runners-up in the Senior Carnival Queen Pageant Yinatra Pieter, Valery Ulloa and Sabrina Richardson. Relatives and representatives of different youth organizations were also there to welcome her.
Turner said she was very happy to be back in Statia, where she once was a Carnival Queen. She is visiting Statia once again, this time to conduct "Sister Talk" motivational workshops. The mother of two, who is now a performing artiste in the United States, will be sharing personal life experiences about sex and sexuality, peer pressure, self-esteem, the importance of education and other topics young girls encounter on a day-to-day basis.
Turner will be conducting workshops, both in Statia and Saba, for two age groups. The workshops in Statia are hosted by Government Service Caribbean Netherlands RCN, in cooperation with Mega D Youth Foundation, Gwendoline van Putten (GVP) School, Aloei Dancers and Daughters of the King.
The workshop for girls between ages 14 to 19 was held Thursday, at Statia Lodges. The workshop for girls ages 10 to 13 will be held at GVP today, Friday, 10:00am to 1:00pm.
On Saba, Turner will be conducting a workshop for girls ages 10 to 13 at Child Focus on Saturday, 10:00am to 1:00pm, and for girls ages 14 to 20 at the Fire Department in The Bottom, that same day from 3:00 until 6:00pm.
The Saba workshops are organised by RCN in conjunction with the Public Entity Saba, Child Focus, Saba Girls and Boys Sports Society's afterschool care and Body, Mind and Spirit Foundation.
