After some six weeks without incidents, flames erupted once again at the dump on Tuesday night.
The Fire Department responded to the blaze and got the fire under control, although it still continued to smoke into Wednesday. World Bank hired consultants EE&G is compiling a procurement report on tackling the dump slated for submission to the World Bank in August. That submission is expected to trigger the release of funds to solve the constantly smoking dump. “I know that my fellow St. Maarten people are suffering from this, and believe me, we are working diligently towards ending this problem for good,” Environment and Infrastructure Minister Miklos Giterson told the press on Wednesday.
