‘Exempt refinery project’

An Aruban committee of experts is deliberating with American authorities to exempt the island’s refinery upgrader project of “Petroleos de Venezuela” PDVSA subsidiary Citgo from the US sanctions against Venezuela’s state-run oil company to pressure the embattled Maduro regime.

This was announced by Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes (left). Talks were planned with the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the US Treasury and the State Department. The prime minister suggested that since permission to establish a Venezuelan aid hub in the Dutch Caribbean was requested and granted, the Americans could also be asked for a favour in return. US $35 million is needed for the second phase of the project that was to start since September last year.
