Fire at abandoned vehicle junk yard

DUTCH QUARTER--Police patrols and Fire Department officials were sent to Madrid Lane in Dutch Quarter at 12:16pm Wednesday and met a garage on fire. The possibility for the fire spreading was quite high, according to police.

Investigating officers realised that several car wrecks located on the property of an abandoned garage were on fire. The Fire Department immediately went to work on extinguishing the fire.

According to the Fire Department officer, in charge at the scene on Wednesday, “The garage had three fires at the same location in the past to which the Fire Department responded. The situation, however, at present is becoming increasingly dangerous as the fires keep getting closer to homes and other buildings in the immediate surroundings.”

There is open access to the property and it has become a dumpsite for old car wrecks and which could become a health hazard in the near future.

Police said no injuries were reported during the incident. The cause of the fire has not been established.
