WILLEMSTAD--Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath announced during the daily press conference that the first confirmed case of COVID-19, a 68-year-old male visitor from the Netherlands, passed away at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC).
The man arrived on the island Thursday, March 5. He became ill the following day and went into a self-imposed quarantine in his hotel room. The following week he called a doctor and was immediately tested.
However, his situation became worse and he was hospitalised. The man had severe respiratory problems and passed away a while ago.
Epidemiologist Izzy Gerstenbluth had earlier stated that the local situation surrounding the virus was under control. So far only three cases of infection are known.
He said it is therefore important to maintain the measures announced by the prime minister. They both called on everybody to adhere to these precautions because the Dutch Caribbean country is not equipped to handle if things were to get out of hand.
