MARIGOT--The Gendarmerie has revealed the last few weeks have seen a rise in incidents of car break-ins, in most cases to parked vehicles, and urges tourists and residents to refrain from leaving any valuables in the car that can be easily seen from outside.
“Incidents of car break-ins can be reduced by better awareness and common sense exercised by the public,” said Commandant Sébastien Manzoni. “For a few months now Gendarmes have been patrolling in tourist areas distributing flyers in French and English warning against break-ins and what to do if you are a victim. These operations are regularly repeated but it is not enough.”
Precautions to take are as follows: Do not leave a bag or any visibly valuable item in your vehicle, even for a short time; Systematically lock windows and doors of your vehicle; Never walk away from your car leaving the engine running or keys in the ignition; Do not leave your IDs, driving licence, or official car documents inside your vehicle; Avoid parking in isolated or poorly lit areas.
If your car has been broken into call the Gendarmerie by dialling 17. Avoid touching the vehicle and go to the Gendarmerie to file a complaint. Inform your bank right away if credit cards have been stolen. Suspend your line in case of theft of cell phone.
