PHILIPSBURG--Health Inspectors from the Inspectorate of Public Health, Social Development and Labour VSA were busy on Monday conducting inspections at supermarkets.

The inspections were the continuation of controls on supermarkets that began some weeks ago and are expected to continue. Carrefour Market on Bush Road and Cost Pro in Madame Estate were controlled on Monday.

During the inspection at Carrefour Market on Bush Road, inspectors were observed checking meat items and supermarket staffers were observed carting off items for disposal.

The inspectors ordered that a section at Cost Pro be closed temporarily due to an issue with the ceiling. Cost Pro management said it was noticed that there was an issue with a section of the ceiling over the open frozen-food cases.

Due to the cases being open, condensation was forming on the ceiling above. This in turn led to a dirty build-up on the ceiling. This was cleaned and it was noted that after several weeks it began to occur again.

Cost Pro said a company specialising in mould and mould-type build-ups was called in along with Sherwin Williams paint. The affected area is being cleaned and repainted with mould-resistant paint. This is expected to be completed today, Tuesday, Cost Pro management told The Daily Herald.

It should be noted that there was no issue with the establishment’s refrigeration. The supermarket apologised for any inconvenience caused to its customers and said it looks forward to having this issue resolved soon.
