PHILIPSBURG--Member of Parliament Tamara Leonard (United Democrats) is seeking amendments to legislation regulating the functioning and election process of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She has classified the regulations as “outdated,” in particular, the stipulation of voting time of 9:00am to 12:00pm.
The legislation governing the Chamber of Commerce and Industry was drafted in 1944. Very few amendments have been made to that legislation since then.
“Our legislation should reflect our current economy and, in doing so, properly cater to our business community. Back when the law was written, there were very few businesses on the island,” Leonard said. The most recent survey conducted by the Department of Statistics tallied 5,438 businesses.
Leonard said she intends to thoroughly review all legislation pertaining to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and to propose a draft amendment to the laws.
