ST. EUSTATIUS--Many activities have been planned in St. Eustatius for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is observed in October. The Month was opened with a church service hosted by Golden Rock Cancer Awareness Foundation (GRCAF) during which it was stressed that early detection saves lives and that women and men must always be aware of any strange feeling in their breasts. Breast exams will be at Queen Beatrix Medical Centre (QBMC) throughout the month.

The examinations, which are a collaboration between QBMC and GRCAF will start by Dr. George Odongo on Friday, October 5. The next examinations will be by Dr. Marije Veerman on Tuesday, October 9. Dr. Fazal Baboe will be on hand on Friday, October 19 and Dr. Odongo on Thursday, October 25. All examinations will be taking place between 2:00pm and 4:00pm. Persons can make an appointment directly at QBMC’s front desk at tel. 318-2371 or 318-1500.

A social evening for all breast cancer patients, survivors and other persons who wish to attend will be held at the Methodist Church’s Elrine Lesley Methodist Auditorium on Thursday, October 18, between 7:00pm and 8:30pm.

Organisers of Taste of the Cultures are asking everyone to wear the colour pink on Thursday, October 25. Persons who want to show their support are being asked to wear the colour pink on Fridays during October.

Blue Island Gem Events will be hosting a Breast Cancer Gala Dinner at the Lions Den on Saturday, October 27, at 7:00pm. Persons may contact Daniela Richardson or GRCAF for tickets. Some of the proceeds from the gala dinner will be donated to GRCAF. A Walk for a Cure Walkathon will be held Wednesday, October 31.

The Cancer Foundation advises everyone to remember that early detection is key to saving lives.
